Client: Botswana International University of Science and Technology
Narrative Description and status of Project:
The proposed site measuring approximately 11 290.48 sqm (1.13ha) is located adjacent to an existing building on the west. The area is mostly covered by a rock outcrop leaving a narrow strip of flat land used as an access to the existing greenhouses structures. Taking cue from existing buildings on campus, we propose the use of heavy structural steel members, highly engineered to form more contemporary but simple shapes inspired by the campus environment and the need to connect the faculties with its site. The steel structure/ frames of the buildings will be exposed, both inside and on the outer shells, in order to achieve a more contemporary, expressive and appealing architectural aesthetic. When left exposed, the structural steel will blatantly express the form, structural integrity, and beauty of the engineering behind it, while simultaneously demonstrating the function and strength of the architecture. The design incorporates several considerations to archive green effect to the environment. In order for the building to feel healthier and give a nature ambient so that the end users do not feel overwhelmed by the building a series of gardens have been located in the building (indoor & roof gardens). This enables the building to have fresh air and cooler indoor spaces and also have spaces to pause and breathe, this achieves conducive thermal comfort.
